The Practitioner Track gave me a framework for model documentation that I started using at work within a week of completing the programme. I would have liked a bit more on the technical side of fairness metrics, but the applied project was well-structured and the feedback on my draft model card was the most concrete teaching I received. The small-group discussions were also good — I was in a cohort with people from Singapore and Japan, which added something.

It turned out that was not really the point — the course was about thinking carefully, not about understanding how models are trained. The reading materials were well-chosen and not overwhelming. The Practitioner Track is well-suited to someone who already has technical experience and wants to develop the softer skills around it — how to document work properly, how to talk about model limitations with colleagues who do not have an ML background. Challenge

Documenting an existing model with no prior documentation

A data analyst at a mid-sized Thai logistics company enrolled in the Practitioner Track because her team had deployed a demand forecasting model two years earlier and had no written record of how it had been evaluated, what data it used, or what its known failure modes were. She wanted to produce documentation that would be genuinely useful to colleagues maintaining the model.

Approach

Working backwards from a deployed system

Using the model card framework introduced in weeks three and four of the track, she worked through the available documentation and interviewed colleagues involved in the original development. The tutor feedback on her draft model card focused on how to describe known limitations in a way that was honest without being alarming to non-technical readers.

Outcome

A document that became an internal standard

The model card she produced during the programme was adopted by her team as the template for documenting two further models developed after she completed the course. Her manager asked her to run an internal session introducing the format to engineers who had not been part of the programme.

"I learned to write about uncertainty in a way that's useful rather than vague. That was the hardest part and the most valuable."

Challenge

Supporting a governance review with no governance framework in place

A compliance officer at a Bangkok-based financial services firm was asked to lead an internal review of the company's use of AI in customer-facing processes. She had no background in AI systems and no existing framework to apply. She enrolled in the Governance Programme to develop both the conceptual foundation and the practical documents she would need.

Approach

Building an assessment framework from scratch

Over the five months of the programme, she developed an AI use register, a risk assessment template, and a set of review questions for new AI procurement decisions. Each document was reviewed in her monthly one-to-one sessions, and the tutor provided written commentary on successive drafts of the risk assessment template.

Outcome

Governance materials adopted by the board risk committee

The AI use register and risk assessment template she produced during the programme were presented to and adopted by the firm's board risk committee three months after she completed the Governance Programme. The procurement review questions were incorporated into the company's vendor onboarding checklist.

Challenge

Thinking more carefully before building, not after

A software engineer at a Bangkok startup building recommendation systems had grown uneasy with the pace at which his team deployed models without discussing their potential effects on different user groups. He joined the Ethics and Foundations course not to change careers but to develop a clearer framework for the questions he wanted to raise at work.

Approach

Using the course material to think through real product decisions

He used the weekly reflections to work through a specific product decision his team was considering — whether to use engagement signals as a proxy for user satisfaction in a recommendation system. The discussion thread responses from his cohort, including people without technical backgrounds, shifted how he framed the question.

Outcome

A changed internal conversation about measurement

He brought the framing from his final reflection into a product planning session and it changed the terms of the conversation his team had about what they were measuring and why. The proxy measure was not abandoned but the team agreed to collect supplementary data to audit it on a quarterly basis.
